Bumblebee Bat or Craseonycteris Thonglongyai

The Bumblebee Bat belongs to the new order, family and species, discovered in 1973 by and named in honor of the Thai zoologist Kitti Thonglongya. It is the world’s smallest species of bat at 29-33 mm in length and a weight of 2 grams. The ears are large relative to the small skull and eyes and extend beyond the rather pig-like snout. It has no tailbone but the membrane between hind limbs.

The Bumblebee Bat has reddish-brown upperparts, although the species seems to occur as another colour phase that has greyer upperparts. The underside is always a paler version of the top. The bats roost in groups of approximately 100 individuals in caves. They are most active at dusk and dawn when they fly around within 1 kilometre of their cave and for about 20 minutes each time to feed on insects.

The Bumblebee Bat gives birth to one baby a year between April and May.

The Bumblebee Bats are presently found in Kanchanaburi province only.
