Bats are the only mammals with forelimbs developed as wings which can truly fly and not just glide limited distances like flying squirrels and lemurs or gliding lizards. They belong to the order Chiroptera. Over 925 species of bats have been discovered so far. Their vast majority are insectivorous found everywhere in the world except the earth poles. The fruit eating bats inhabit the tropical and semitropical areas of the world but not the United States and Europe. Some species are known for their carnivorous habits, feeding on blood, fish and other small animals. And some enjoy a diet of nectar.
Thailand has known more than 109 species of bats. Bat head and body length ranges from 2.9 cm to 34 cm. Bat wings are modified forelimbs, much as are bird wings, except in the case of bats the flight surface is covered with thin membrane extending from the fore fingers to the limbs or the tail, while in birds the flight surface is provided mostly by feathers grown out of the forearm bones. Bat hind limbs in particular are generally short and small. Bats are regarded as the animal with the longest fingers with very sharp claws and teeth whereas birds possess no teeth.
